The Legacy

The African Methodist Episcopal Church is unique in that it is the first religious body in the Western World that had its origin over sociological rather than theological differences.

Richard Allen, Daniel Coker, and James Champion were at the Vanguard of a contingent of Africans who left St. George Methodist Church and formed The Free African Society, from whence The African Methodist Church was conceived.

The Florida Conference (11th Episcopal  District) of The African Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in June 1867, under the leadership of Bishop A. W. Wayman, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, Tallahassee, Florida. During September 1892, some twenty-five years later, family member of God fearing African businessmen, government workers, and citrus growers, under the leadership of Rev. C.H. Boger and Presiding Elder J.J. Harris, organized an African Methodist Church, in Titusville, Florida, and declared it “Saint James”.
